Due to the closure of Campion School in 2007, we are currently looking to partner with a vocational college in the Merseyside area. More news about this exciting new development will be announced shortly. Many of our former students are doing really well at sea, even though they started off as very green deckhands and motormen. Many are now officers of the watch in both deck and engineer branches on a variety of merchant vessels, while others are serving with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The Coxswain of the P&O cruise ship ORIANA is an old student of ours. |

The course for the City and Guilds 4854 Nautical Studies certificate is wide and worthwhile, involving navigation, chart work, meteorology, ship stability and many other topics. All students obtain their four STCW 95 pre-sea certificates and some go to South Shields for an NVQ2 marine engineering course, while others go to Hull to obtain the OPITO basic qualification for working on oil standby vessels. Practical seamanship lessons take place on the MV LOACH and our own 39ft fishing/work boat TRINITY LOACH, which are based in Liverpool's commercial dock system. The LOACH is essentially a floating classroom, while the TRINITY is equipped with GPS, VHF, RADAR and FISHFINDER and used for navigation, passage planning and boat handling elements of the course. Because Liverpool Nautical Sixth Form is part of St. Paul's Trust, we have a Christian responsibility not to leave our students struggling to find their first seagoing job, which can be very difficult. We promise to do our best to to find a ship for those who satisfactorily complete the course. In sixteen years we have only failed to do so once. |
